Update: Recognition of New Breeds
Following approval from the Minister of Agriculture, and as a result of compliance with Section 20, subsections (2) and (3) of the Animal Pedigree Act and Sections 25.3 and 36.14 of The Canadian Kennel Club By-laws and Chapter IV. Section A of the CKC Policy and Procedures Manual, the following breeds are to be added to Section 25.1 of The Canadian Kennel Club By-laws:

1) Dutch Sheepdog
2) Hovawart
3) Iceland Sheepdog
4) Neapolitan Mastiff

As of October 25, 2005, the breeds can be recognized for registration purposes in accordance with the CKC policies governing recognition. Effective March 1, 2006, the breeds will also be eligible to compete in CKC approved events.

The breeds have been placed in the following groups:

BREED GROUP

1. Dutch Sheepdog VII (7) Herding
2. Hovawart III (3) Working
3. Iceland Sheepdog VII (7) Herding
4. Neapolitan Mastiff III (3) Working

The Board of Directors has agreed that the FCI standards be used as the official CKC standard for the breeds.

Given that these specific breeds have been on our Miscellaneous Class List for a number of years, the graduated fee will not apply until December 1, 2006.

Amendments to the name changes for the following breeds were approved:

1. Belgian Sheepdog to the Belgian Shepherd Dog
2. Mexican Hairless to Xoloitzcuintli
