Big Wins at The 2012 Purina National - A CKC Charity Event |
|
|
It was a weekend of record temperatures and record scores at the 6th Annual Purina National - A CKC Charity Event, March 9-11, in support of the CKC Foundation. The greatly anticipated event exemplified purebred dogdom at its finest and this was reflected in the beaming faces of the crowds and proud handlers, owners and breeders alike.
With top-notch canine competitors, a terrific show of breed clubs, unique dog products and services, a dedicated, family-friendly, entertainment area and daily prize draws from our CKC affiliates, the Purina National - A CKC Charity Event was not to be missed. A good time was had by all, and all for a great cause!
"Once again, Nestlé Purina has brought tremendous value to this prestigious event," states Nancy Carey, Executive Director of The Canadian Kennel Club. "The Canadian Kennel Club appreciates their support of purebred dogs and commitment to the continued success of The Purina National - A CKC Charity Event."
Success was definitely in the air on Saturday, March 10, when Bernese Mountain Dog, GCH AVATARS TRY TRY AGAIN "Ty"(Breeder/Handler: Kimberly Groves;Owners: Kimberly Groves & Luiz Fernandes) was crowned as the $10,000 Best in Show Winner. Congratulations Kimberly, Luiz and "Ty"!
Proud Best in Show winner, Kimberly Groves, tells CKC what it means for her to win Best in Show at The Purina National - A CKC Charity Event:
"As a breeder, owner and handler of a dog like Ty, it is always an honor to present him to the fancy. Ty has amazing type and temperament which makes him a great show dog. It was amazing to win BIS at such a great show. The CKC and Purina National should beextremely proud to put on such a great show. It is nice for exhibitors to present our breeding stock in such a grand fashion. It was an honor to go BIS and retire Ty at a show like the 2012 Purina National. Thank you for this wonderful, memorable win."
Saturday evening also saw Bearded Collie, CH SENGALAS FRANKLY CLASSICAL "Frankie", (Breeder: Nick & Angela May; Handler: Julie Kempster; Owners: Julie Kempster & Bea Sawka) win Best Puppy in Show. Kudos for a job well done!
A special congratulations goes out to Saturday's High in Trial #1 Open B winner, Weimaraner, GMOTCH ECHOBAR'S DOUBLE IMPACT "Asia" (Breeder: Barbara Heuman; Owner/Handler: Rose Apollonio) and High in Trial #2 Open B winner Belgian Shepherd Dog, GMOTCH. STARBRIGHT PASSIONXTRODINAIR "Passion" (Breeder: Sharon Redmer, Brenda Vyletel; Handler: Ikena Hilmayer; Owners: Ikena Hilmayer & Jerry Burke).
Remarkably, following a successful three days at the event, where "Passion" took High in Trial each day, with almost perfect scores, she became a High in Trial Winner at The Purina National - A CKC Charity Event for the fifth year in a row! Trial #6 on Sunday, March 11 marked "Passion's" last time in the Obedience ring. It has been quite a career for this eleven-year-old rescue dog - who has achieved over 150 HIT's, 8 perfect '200' scores and a ranking of 4th in the 2010 top 10 Obedience dogs in Canada. Happy retirement "Passion"!
Dogs weren't the only winners that weekend. Junior Handler competitor, Susie Emerson, walked away with the title of Best Overall Junior Handler, plus a $1000 bursary!
The Purina National also showcased other exciting achievements that weekend, including notable performances by Obedience newcomers (such as American Cocker Spaniel, Nonnies Simply Wonderful - a new dog with a new handler, in a new class!). It was clear, based upon the number of high scores recorded, that there was some stiff canine competition out in the Obedience ring. You may find references to specific competitors and their scores via Twitter and Facebook. There was also great success in Rally Obedience, with an impressive number of entries!

A special highlight of that weekend included having funnyman and political ranter, Rick Mercer, spend the day with us at the Show on Saturday. Be sure to watch for Purina National coverage in The Rick Mercer Report coming March 20, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. on CBC (8:30 p.m. in NL).
We would like to extend a special thanks to our generous sponsor Nestlé Purina, the 2012 Show Committee, the distinguished panel of Judges and our member volunteers, who all helped make the 2012 Purina National - A CKC Charity Event an incredible success.
