At The Canadian Kennel Club Board of Directors Meeting that was held in March 2006 in Victoria, BC, the Board passed a motion to amend the Policy and Procedures Manual, Procedure RG004 – Procedure for Recognition of New Breed. The new procedure will be effective as of September 1, 2006.
- All breeds that are included in the Miscellaneous List as of September 1, 2006, will remain on the List for a period of one (1) year beginning September 1, 2006. Before September 1, 2007, representatives of those breeds must elect to apply for listed breed status (which allows participation in all CKC events) OR elect that the breed remain on the List for future recognition purposes only (which will not be allowed participation in any CKC event).
- At the expiration of the one year period for the making of an election, any breed for which no election has been made will be removed from the Miscellaneous List.
- To be eligible to participate in CKC events, representatives of the Miscellaneous List breed should contact the CKC in writing to apply for listed breed status. There will be no charge for the application. The application will be referred to the Board of Directors for approval to poll CKC members.
- If the poll results are favourable, the breed shall become eligible to participate in CKC events on the effective date determined in accordance with Chapter VI, Shows and Trials, Section “D” of the Policy and Procedures Manual.
- If the poll results are not in favour, the breed will be removed from the Miscellaneous List.
- A breed that becomes a listed breed under these rules is subject to the rules governing recognition of listed breeds and must be listed for a minimum period of three (3) years before it can apply for recognition.
The first four “Listed Breeds” will be the Cane Corso (Group 3), the Coton de Tulear (Group 5), the Parson Russell Terrier (Group 4) and the Polish Lowland Sheepdog (Group 7). Based on the results of the 2004 referendum, these breeds are deemed to have been approved by CKC members.
