Messy Hair Kennels is a small, family‑-run breeding program founded by myself, Chari, along with my daughters, Ashley and Amanda. Since beginning our journey with Schapendoes in 2012, our philosophy has remained simple and unwavering: our dogs are family first.
We chose to breed Schapendoes to support the healthy development of this remarkable breed and to help others experience the joy of owning a dog that is intelligent, affectionate, and wonderfully low‑-maintenance. Located in Tottenham, Ontario—approximately one hour north of Toronto—we are proud to raise our dogs in a loving, home‑-based environment.
All of our Schapendoes come from carefully selected Canadian and European championship bloodlines. We prioritize health and responsible breeding practices, ensuring each of our dogs is thoroughly evaluated prior to breeding. Our health testing follows OFA standards for hips, elbows, and heart, along with CAER eye examinations. We also conduct comprehensive bloodwork, including genetic testing for PRA and Hyperuricosuria.
Early socialization is essential to raising well‑-balanced, confident dogs. Our puppies are introduced to everyday sights, sounds, and experiences from a young age. When we have a litter, the puppies are raised in our home, with every family member involved in their care and development. Before leaving for their forever homes—no earlier than nine weeks of age—each puppy undergoes temperament and structural evaluations, receives a full veterinary health check with first vaccinations, is microchipped, and begins crate training.
Schapendoes are exceptional family companions. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them well‑-suited for a wide range of activities, including agility, obedience, rally, flyball, herding, tracking, fetching, and trick training.
