Black Russian Terrier
Origin
The Black Russian Terrier (BRT) was created in the former Soviet Union’s State Military Kennel “Red Star” through selective cross-breeding. The principal ancestors are the Giant Schnauzer, the Rottweiler, the now extinct Moscow Water Dog (Newfoundland, Caucasian Shepherd and East European Shepherd) and the Airedale Terrier. The breed was first recognized by the FCI in 1983. The Black Russian Terrier was created to fill a variety of military needs including sentry and protection duty. The Black Russian Terrier is a reliable guardian breed and a versatile worker, adaptable to various climatic conditions and lifestyles.
Temperament
The Black Russian Terrier temperament is of utmost importance. The BRT is a courageous, calm and confident guard breed. They are somewhat reserved and aloof toward strangers and therefore do not form indiscriminate friendships and do not relish intrusion into their personal space. The BRT forms a very strong bond with their owners, is fiercely devoted to them and very protective of them. This is an assertive breed that needs an experienced owner. The BRT requires frequent and regular socialization and training, as well as consistency in daily living.
Activity Level
As a reliable working breed, the BRT has a strong endurance level and would be best suited in an environment where they have a job.
Height/Weight
The Black Russian Terrier ranges from 25.6” to 30” (65-77 cm) in height at the shoulders. They generally weigh 100 to 160 lbs for males and 75 to 120 lbs for females.
Coat
The BRT has a dense double coat, with a moderate wave, and a softer undercoat.
Colour
The Black Russian Terrier is solid black or black with up to 30% grey hairs, dispersed throughout the coat.
Grooming
The BRT requires weekly brushing and a session with a wide-tooth comb to keep the coat healthy.
