As you may be aware, the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) Council approved policies banning Alberta registered veterinarians from performing any elective and/or non-therapeutic medical/surgical procedures, and the mandatory reporting of animal abuse and neglect. These policies are effective as of July 1, 2019.
In May, CKC asked for further clarification on the intersection of these new policies. ABVMA has provided CKC with an Interpretation Document with specific scenarios meant to provide veterinary practices clarity on the intersection of these new policies. Please note that there may be updates to this document based on feedback from ABVMA members and the public.
CKC continues to support freedom of choice so that breeders of purebred dogs may decide for themselves to continue the practice of cropping, docking and front dewclaw removal, to promote safety in performance activities, and support hygienic animal husbandry.
