Announced as CKC’s strategic priority at the 2023 AGM, CKC is taking significant steps to support member breeders in the preservation of their chosen breed(s) through an Integrated Breed Health Program.
The Integrated Breed Health Program supports the development of five key projects:
- Expanded Breeder Education
- Improved Breeder Community Support
- Developing Breed Health Strategies
- A DNA Program
- A CKC Breeder Certification Program
The CKC has an integral role in the preservation of well-bred purebred dogs. The five projects under the Integrated Breed Health Program are reflective of the values CKC member breeders hold in the preservation of purebred dogs. They will help connect future puppy buyers with dedicated CKC member breeders who are committed to breed-appropriate health testing, ongoing science-based education, and best practices. And will help CKC demonstrate the expertise of the CKC and CKC member breeders in the preservation of healthy, well-bred purebred dogs to industry and government stakeholders.
All projects under the Integrated Breed Health Program are being developed - and will be released - in a phased, supportive manner. Some early elements, including the first Breeder Education course on Royal Canin Academy, and information gathering and review with our National Breed Clubs for the development of the Breed Health Strategies, are already underway.
CKC Members, breeders, National Breed Clubs, and other key stakeholders are being consulted every step of the way, with the Genetics & Medical Committee, Breeder Relations Committee, and other subject matter experts providing guidance and direction. We will work with key partners along the way to bring these projects to life, and members will have frequent opportunities to provide feedback and suggestions for next steps.
