CKC Urges Caution Re: Serious Dog Illness in Norway

As you may be aware, a deadly unknown illness is currently afflicting dogs in Norway. The Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI) and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (NFSA) are investigating and at this time, the cause of the illness has not been determined.

As a precautionary measure, the NFSA has advised owners to avoid contact between dogs, in case the illness is contagious. In addition, the Norwegian Kennel Club (NKK) Board has cancelled their dog shows and will not send national teams to FCI Championships until further notice, pending a change in recommendations by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority. The NKK Board also recommends that their members do not attend official activities abroad.

The Canadian Kennel Club has been in contact with CVMA, FCI, CFIA and CDC regarding this recent development and there are no dog importation restrictions planned at this time, as all agencies continue to monitor the situation.

CKC urges you to avoid non-essential travel to Norway with your dog and for those who are already travelling within Norway, we advise that you follow the
recommendations of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, to minimize the risk of exposure.

Please watch for an update as more information becomes available.
