Update on CKC Advocacy Activity in Quebec

The CKC was recently invited to attend a press conference held by the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Mr. André Lamontagne, and MNA Audrey Bogemans (Iberville), government assistant to the Minister in charge of animal welfare, for an announcement that would advance the Ministry’s animal welfare efforts by:

  • Holding stakeholder consultations across Quebec from May until September 2023

  • Hiring at least 20 additional inspectors dedicated to animal welfare at a cost of $8 million

Quebec Board Director, Denis Gros-Louis and Serge Bilodeau, member of CKC’s National Advocacy and Government Relations Committee, were on hand to meet with Minister Lamontagne, MNA Bogemans, and various Ministry staff, to express CKC’s interest in collaborating with the Ministry, in support of the health and well-being of dogs. The Ministry’s recent announcement follows the passing of the regulation regarding the Welfare and safety of domestic companion animals and equines in August 2022. Although this regulation has been enacted, most requirements will not take effect until February 10, 2024.

To strengthen our advocacy endeavours in Quebec regarding the recent regulation, CKC has been working with a Quebec-based public affairs firm. The firm is also developing a national advocacy strategy that will complement our efforts in Quebec. We will continue to work with the support of our consultant and member experts, to ensure that the concerns of CKC members are well represented.
