We continue to advocate on your behalf regarding the new import rules from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We have outlined a few updates below regarding steps that CKC has taken, as well as developments in the United States.
- CKC Letter to Minister of Health Mark Holland
We have received a positive response from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in response to our letter to Minister Holland. CFIA validated the concerns that CKC raised about the minimum 6-month age requirement, as well as our request for an exemption for CKC registered dogs. They also expressed appreciation for the letter CKC sent to Mandy Cohen, Director of the CDC. The agency informed us that they are continuing to work with the CDC regarding the future rules and to specifically address concerns regarding the minimum 6-month age requirement, while protecting against dog rabies and allowing the free movement of people and goods. CKC will be sending the CDC a follow-up letter outlining our remaining concerns.
- New U.S. Bills addressing the CDC rule
On August 16, Congressman Timothy Kennedy introduced the “Border-Crossing and Re-entry for K9s” Act to permanently pause the new CDC dog importation rule for dogs travelling from low-risk countries. Over the past couple of weeks, CKC was approached by another U.S. Congressman and is working with the American Kennel Club (AKC) to provide feedback on behalf of CKC members, regarding another bill being developed in response to the CDC rule. |
