Discover One of CKC's Fastest-Growing Dog Sports: Sprinter

Blink and you'll miss it.

In just a few seconds, a Sprinter dog can race 100 metres down the course, chasing a lure with incredible speed, focus, and enthusiasm. It's fast-paced, exciting, and a whole lot of fun for dogs and owners alike.

See Sprinter in action:

Open to purebred and mixed-breed dogs over six months of age, Sprinter is one of the Canadian Kennel Club’s fastest-growing dog sports. Designed to tap into a dog’s natural chase instinct, this beginner-friendly activity offers a fun, safe way to stay active, build confidence, and strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

Whether you’re stepping into the world of dog sports for the first time or looking for a new challenge, Sprinter is an exciting activity that dogs of all sizes can enjoy.

CKC Sprinter event is growing in participants rapidly. Join in the fun!

Spring is around the corner, and it is time for YOU and your dog to get out to a Sprinter Event.
Has your dog been inside hiding from the cold snowy winter? Get ready- Sprinter is a fun 100-meter straight line dash event on a flat surface allowing your dog to chase a lure (Plastic bunny- often a white plastic bag is used) to earn points towards titles. It is beginner friendly, high energy and low stress activity. Sprinter creates the bond between you and your dog through a safe, fun, exciting high-speed chase allowing your dog to burn off energy in a controlled environment.

Testimonial from CKC Staff Member Cindy Kremer:
I’ve been involved with Sprinters since it began in 2018 at the very first Sprinter Trial. It has been an incredible journey. Three of my dogs now hold Novice Sprinter titles and two have earned their Sprinter titles. There is truly nothing better than watching a dog run—their big, joyful grin always mirrors their owner’s. The Sprinter community is supportive, welcoming, and always willing to lend a hand. It’s a wonderful way to meet new people while doing something your dog absolutely loves. I encourage everyone to take their dog out to this sport for the pure enjoyment of it!

How does it work?
Everyone will be able to participate at their own pace. See the Sprinter Rules and Regulations.

Your dog is released at the start line, and then a catcher secures them at the end.

The lure is pulled by a mechanical motor, staying just ahead of the dog to encourage maximum speed.

Run times are converted into kilometers per hr (km/hr) and multiplied by a handicap score based on their height. Titles are awarded upon your dog accumulating a given number of points.

Typically, there are three runs per trial making it extremely fast paced to test your dog’s speed.

How can I train and prepare for an event?
No Experience needed. It is a natural chasing behaviour where all dogs of all sizes can enjoy.

If your unsure if your dog will chase the lure, practise at home by flirting with a pole and a toy attached to a string.
