Effective July 1, 2016, the Russell Terrier will be eligible to compete as a Listed Breed in Group 4 (Terriers), and the Russkiy Toy will be eligible to compete as a Listed Breed in Group 5 (Toys).
In accordance with CKC policy, CKC All Breed Judges and Breed/Group Judges that are licensed or on permit to judge breeds in Group 4 and Group 5, will be required to successfully complete an Open Book Test for these two new breeds prior to being approved to judge them. Please note that regardless of whether or not you are licensed to judge the Russell Terrier by the American Kennel Club, you are required to write the CKC test. The Russkiy Toy is not recognized by the American Kennel Club.
The Open Book Test for the Russell Terrier and the Russkiy Toy are now available on the CKC website at
www.ckc.ca under the Events tab, then CKC Breed Standards, Conformation Open Book Tests. Please print the test(s) appropriate for you, complete it, and mail, fax, or e-mail to Head Office, as designated below, by May 31, 2016.
If you are an All Breed Judge then you must complete both tests. If you are licensed to judge all breeds in Group 4 (but not an All Breed Judge), you must complete the test for the Russell Terrier. If you are licensed to judge all breeds in Group 5 (but not an All Breed Judge), you must complete the test for the Russkiy Toy. If you are a permit judge for all breeds in Group 4, or all breeds in Group 5 you must complete the appropriate test. If you are a judge on permit for half of Group 4 or half Group 5, and you are licensed for the other half, then you must complete the appropriate test. If you are a permit judge for only half of Group 4 or Group 5, and you are not licensed for the other half, then you are not required to write the tests at this time.
The Breed Standards will be forwarded to all CKC Conformation Judges in 8 ½ x 11 format, but are currently available on-line with the Open Book Tests. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the staff in the Event Planning Department in Shows and Trials.

In the meantime, we will continue to approve Judging Panels for events after July 1
st. If the Judging Panel that has been submitted to Head Office does not include these two new breeds, we will communicate with the club to assign them to a judge on the judging panel.
Lastly, please note that in accordance with CKC policy (copy below) judges will have until October 14, 2016 to complete the Open Book Tests without being assessed any fees.
"When a new breed is approved by the Board, conformation judges will be provided with a 6 month period to write an Open Book Test for that breed, after which, an administrative fee as set by the Board will be implemented.”
