Ontario Legislation Aims to Positively Integrate Dogs into Society

The Ontario government recently reached out to CKC for support regarding proposed legislation that would enable restaurant owners and operators to decide whether to let dogs accompany their owners on a patio. The Bill would provide an excellent opportunity to promote responsible dog ownership and showcase well-trained dogs, while supporting local business. The purpose of the Bill is to reduce regulatory barriers for local businesses and allow resident dog owners the opportunity to spend time with their dogs while out for a drink.

CKC was invited to the official government announcement in Uxbridge, Ontario. Richard Paquette, CKC Board Director and Mike Macbeth, CKC member were on site to support the Bill and meet with ministers and other dignitaries.

The Ministry of Health will develop an education and awareness campaign to ensure business owners and public health inspectors are aware of these changes. Ontario members may provide feedback on the proposed changes until November 27.

If passed, this new legislation will come into effect January 1, 2020.
