Update Re: CFIA Dog Import Requirements


Since the CFIA first implemented new import requirements for commercial dogs under 8 months of age for breeding, resale and show/exhibition (permanent stay) four months ago, CKC has continued to advocate vigilantly on your behalf. We remain committed to working with CFIA to reduce the regulatory burden on members who legitimately import a few healthy dogs into Canada.

Due to the recent dissolution of parliament and call for a federal election, the federal government has been observing the caretaker convention—which restricts CFIA’s work with stakeholders, until the election concludes. We continue to work with internal and external subject matter experts to develop reasonable solutions and recommendations that will accommodate small scale breeders and support CFIA’s efforts to combat the inhumane treatment of animals and the importation of unhealthy dogs. CKC will meet with CFIA at the end of this month to discuss our proposals.

Please continue to email examples of how the new changes are impacting your breeding program to Siddika.Mithani@inspection.gc.ca and copy information@ckc.ca. Watch for further updates as we continue this important work, to safeguard the genetic diversity required for the healthy breeding of purebred dogs in Canada.
