Weather Reminders for Members & Event Hosts

As the summer heat settles in, it is important to remember that weather conditions, including heat, humidity, and sun exposure, can affect dogs differently than humans. Even on seemingly mild days, the temperature can feel much hotter depending on humidity, lack of shade, or air movement. Be sure to stay hydrated, take breaks in shaded or cool areas, and avoid vigorous activity. Dogs should never be left unattended. For more warm-weather tips, check out CKC’s blog post, “7 Summer Safety Tips.”

For clubs hosting events, please be reminded that CKC’s policy permits event-giving clubs to cancel, curtail or postpone judging in the event of adverse weather conditions, such as extreme heat, when there is a risk of injury to participants or their dogs. No penalty will be imposed if such a decision is made in the interest of safety, however, all changes must be reported to the Canadian Kennel Club.

(10) Cancellations and/or Withdrawals
(a) During adverse and/or severe weather conditions, it is at the discretion of the event-giving club to cancel, curtail and/or postpone the judging of the event if the weather is severe enough to cause injury to the exhibitors and their dogs. No penalty shall be imposed by The Canadian Kennel Club if such condition has caused the cancellation or postponement of the event.
