Explore the World of CKC Scent Detection

CKC Scent Detection event is growing in participants rapidly.

It is time for YOU to get involved with your dog creating an unbreakable bond and have a lot of fun learning together. It is a magnificent event allowing your dog to use its natural sense of smell to locate specific target odours in various environments. Inspired by professional working detection dogs, it emphasizes the teamwork and communication between the dog and its handler. It does not require you or your dog to be athletes.

Testimonial from CKC Staff Member Kimberley O’Doherty:
Learning scent detection has opened the world for my dog, giving her practical skills she now uses to manage everyday life. Thanks to the CKC, DTango has been entered in these events for several years working towards her titles at her own pace. CKC provides a safe supportive environment with judges that are delighted to see all breeds participate, regardless of quirks, ability or age. It is the perfect sport for us because it’s one where you compete against yourself, where it’s just you and your dog working together towards a shared goal. Sometimes everything clicks, sometimes the handler makes a mistake, and sometimes your dog just feels happy and entertains the judges with their antics. It’s always a fun and wonderful way to build confidence and a bond with your dog. It’s never too late to start your scent detection journey- requires minimal equipment and can be easily learned and practiced at home, making it ideal for handlers and dogs of all ages.”

How does it work?
Dogs are tested in three distinct "elements" or environments:
  • Containers: Odours are hidden inside boxes, luggage, or other vessels.
  • Interior: Searches take place inside a building, often with furniture and household objects.
  • Exterior: Outdoor searches where dogs must navigate wind and weather distractions.
Within these elements, events are organized into difficulty levels from instinct to master, allowing time for you to progress to earn qualifying scores to earn titles. Everyone will be able to participate at their own pace. Rules & Regulations for CKC Scent Detection Trials.

How can I train and prepare for an event?
The sport uses specific essential oils. A single drop is typically placed on a cotton swab and hidden in a tin or container.
  • Primary Scents: Wintergreen, Pine, and Anise.
  • Advanced Scents:  Clove
