Meet the Bergamasco Shepherd Dog

The Bergamasco Shepherd is a medium-sized herding breed known for its distinctive coat, which forms flat, felted sections called “flocks.” The coat’s unique texture comes from three types of hair that weave together as the dog matures.

The breed originated centuries ago in the Alpine regions of northern Italy and Switzerland. Bergamascos were bred to tend large flocks of sheep across mountainous terrain and plains. After the Second World War, the breed was nearly decimated. Dedicated people found dogs suitable for breeding, and Italy drafted the first breed standard in 1958.

Intelligent, loyal and affectionate with their families, Bergamascos retain the watchful nature of a herding dog. Their coat also needs thoughtful care as it matures, including hands-on work to separate the flocks.

The Bergamasco Shepherd Dog is one of the breeds being featured ahead of the November referendum. The Biewer Terrier will be featured later this week.
