The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen is a rough-coated French scent hound proposed for recognition in the Canadian Kennel Club’s 2026 referendum.
A hound shaped by the Vendée
The breed takes its name from the Vendée region of France. Its history is closely connected to hunting in the area’s challenging terrain. Breeders developed a hound with the stamina and scenting ability to pursue hare, while its harsh coat offered protection from brambles and thorns.
The Club du Griffon Vendéen recognized the Grand and Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen as two varieties in 1907. Separate standards for the Grand and Petit were agreed in 1951–52.
Thank you to Jean-Christophe Boulinguez for sharing the breed’s history and photos.
