The Yakutian Laika is one of four breeds proposed for full CKC recognition in the 2026 referendum. An ancient breed from Yakutia, Siberia, it worked alongside local people for thousands of years, pulling sleds, hunting, herding reindeer, hauling game and transporting supplies.
Historical accounts from the 1800s describe sled teams carrying mail and heavy loads across northern routes. With lighter loads, dogs were reported to cover up to 140 versts, about 148 kilometres, in a day. As modernization and mechanization reduced the need for sled dogs, the breed’s numbers declined. A recovery effort began in 1993.
