CKC Exhibitors Triumph and Inspire

When it comes to training, dogs are willing participants. For some trainers, running through their paces can be a challenge, but recent success stories have highlighted that having a physical disability isn’t a barrier to reaching the top.

Fifty-year CKC member, Sharon Palmer and her Shetland Sheepdog Sky* were invited to represent Canada and defend their Jumpers title at the ParAgility World Cup (PAWC) in Austria on August 27-30, 2015. The team won two Silver medals, placed second overall and is currently ranked second in the world!

This is just the tip of the iceberg of what Sharon has been able to achieve. Once she began experiencing mobility issues, Sharon moved to a smaller breed. Over the years, her dogs have excelled in obedience, agility, Sharon-Palmer.jpgrally, conformation, flyball and herding. Sky’s predecessor Tyler earned 135 performance titles, and Sky has 102...so far. Tyler and Sky are two of just five Shelties to have earned the Working Trial Championship title for herding, since it was first offered by the ASCA in 1957. In 2014, Sky not only qualified for PAWC, but also qualified for the Canadian Herding Championships and finished fifth in both ducks and sheep. These are incredible accomplishments for dogs that are, first and foremost, Sharon’s service dogs.

*Sky's full title is CH. WTCH, ATChC, C-ATCH, U-CD, UR-O3, VCX, VTCH, U-AGII, MVS JUBILEE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON, CKC CD, RAE, CRNMCL, CRAMCL, CRXMCL, CRXT, CRB, CRS, AGMX, AGXJ, MSCDC, ExStB, ExJB, ExGB, ExSB, ExSCB, VBA, JS-N, ChST, FDCH-s, AKC HT, CKC HI, HI-sd, HA-sd, SDI, HTT, AHBA HTADI-d, HTADII-s, TT, DOT, CGN.

ForbiddenPlateauTrials.jpgAt the Forbidden Plateau Obedience and Tracking Club in BC, September 26 & 27, 2015, Saturday’s two High in Trials were won by exhibitors who used walkers the entire time they were in the ring. Jacqueline Boyd and Vizsla Akar Little Deuce Coupe picked up their HIT from the Open B class and June Kerr and Labrador Retriever Massie’s Cayenne Pepper competed in Novice A and earned their CD title on the same weekend. Sunday’s two trials were both won by Vizsla Ch., AGMCh. & OTCh. Jaybren's Fine Gold CGN, IP, TD, DDX, AgMX, AgMXJ2 and Blair Kilgour, who requires braces on both legs. Just goes to show that everyone can participate, as long as they wish!
