CKC Reveals Canada’s Top 10 Most Popular Dog Breeds of 2020

  • Labrador Retriever continues to fetch top spot for the 26th year in a row
  • Cavalier King Charles Spaniel takes the 10th place spot this year, knocking Bulldog off the list

Toronto, ON (April 9, 2021) - Did your favourite breed make this year’s top 10? The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), Canada’s primary registry for purebred dogs, is proud to announce the top ten most popular dog breeds of 2020, with some exciting changes to the lineup.

Top dog for the 26th consecutive year, the Labrador Retriever unsurprisingly continues to maintain first place. "The versatility and friendliness of the Lab make for the perfect addition to the family!" says Paul Pobega, President of the Labrador Retriever Club of Canada (LRCC). Pobega adds that those considering purchasing a Labrador Retriever should keep in mind their training, socialization, and exercise needs. They are a great family pet, good with children, and excel in suburban or country settings. With that fantastic resume, it is no surprise that they are the #1 most popular dog breed in Canada again this year!

It was a close second for the Golden Retriever, managing to knock the German Shepherd Dog down to third place for the first time since 2012! The Golden Retriever is a wonderful family pet, especially noted for being trustworthy, excelling in obedience, and reliable as a guide dog for the seeing-impaired. The German Shepherd Dog was close behind. Highly valued in police work, tracking, guiding the blind, drug and bomb detection, search and rescue, and so much more, German Shepherds also excel as members of families who live active lifestyles.

The Standard Poodle, French Bulldog, and Shetland Sheepdog continue to hold the same places as last year, taking fourth, fifth, and sixth place in the lineup. Astoundingly, the Australian Shepherd jumped two spots to take seventh place, pushing the Havanese and the Bernese Mountain Dog both down a spot to fetch eighth and ninth place! Not only heralded for their good looks, Australian Shepherds can also be wonderful additions to an active family, with their eagerness to please and loyal nature.

In an unexpected shake-up, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel took tenth place this year, knocking the Bulldog off the list. A wonderful companion, it is no surprise that the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is gaining popularity. With its long silky coat and beautiful feathering on the ears, legs, feet, and tail, this gentle and affectionate breed is sure to continue making its way up the list in the future.
