New WestJet Pet Travel Restrictions Re: Brachycephalic & Strong Breeds

WestJet has recently implemented new pet travel restrictions for brachycephalic cat and dog breeds and “strong” dog breeds. As of July 4, 2023, the airline no longer transports brachycephalic breeds and strong breeds (and any mix of these breeds) as checked baggage due to health and safety concerns.

There are no changes to in-cabin travel requirements, except rabbits are no longer permitted to travel in-cabin.

Strong breeds must now be transported in a CR 82 crate and booked by WestJet Cargo
WestJet Cargo transports brachycephalic breeds, subject to veterinary health checks, however, seasonal heat restrictions apply from July 1 to September 15, 2023. WestJet Cargo does not accept brachycephalic breeds for transport anywhere when the outside ground temperature is 29.5 degrees Celsius or higher at the departure city, the destination city, or any connection point in between.

As a reminder, Air Canada also has pet travel restrictions in place. Visit Air Canada and Air Canada Cargo for more details.

We encourage members to review airline restrictions regularly, including country-specific regulations regarding restrictions on the entry of animals and vaccination/documentation requirements for WestJet and Air Canada, prior to booking.
