A Message from Natalie

As I reflect on my first year as Executive Director of the Canadian Kennel Club, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude. It has been a year of learning, listening, and understanding the many people, programs, traditions, and values that form the foundation of our organization. Most importantly, it has been a year spent getting to know the passionate community that makes the CKC what it is. 

One of the greatest privileges of this role has been attending CKC-sanctioned dog shows and events across the country. At every event I attended, I was struck by the extraordinary dedication of our members. Whether exhibiting, competing, volunteering, judging, or simply supporting fellow enthusiasts, our community's passion for dogs is unmistakable. I witnessed firsthand the commitment that breeders, owners, handlers, and fanciers bring to preserving and promoting Canada's pedigree dog breeds. Their knowledge, enthusiasm, and stewardship serve as a powerful reminder of why the CKC's work remains so important.

Over the past year, I have also had the opportunity to participate in numerous committee meetings. These experiences provided valuable insight into the tremendous amount of work that happens behind the scenes to support our organization. More than anything, I came away with an even greater appreciation for the volunteers who generously contribute their time and expertise. The CKC relies heavily on the commitment of volunteers across all facets of the organization, and their dedication continues to be one of our greatest strengths.

Sitting at the Board table has provided another important perspective. Throughout the year, I have listened to thoughtful discussions and healthy debate as Board Directors brought forward the comments, concerns, and priorities of the members they represent. What has consistently stood out to me is the passion each Board Director has for the future of the CKC and the care they take in ensuring that the voices of their constituents are heard. While viewpoints may differ, the shared commitment to the organization and the dogs we serve remains a common thread.

I have also been fortunate to work alongside an exceptional staff team. Every day, I see employees who are committed to finding better ways of doing things, not only from an operational and efficiency standpoint, but also with a focus on improving service to our members. Their willingness to embrace change, seek solutions, and continuously improve has been inspiring. The dedication of our staff is a critical component of the CKC's success, and I am grateful for their support and expertise. 

Beyond the organization itself, I have had the opportunity to meet with a variety of industry stakeholders and partner organizations. These conversations have reinforced the importance of collaboration and have highlighted opportunities for alignment on issues that matter to dog owners, breeders, and the broader dog community. Strong partnerships will continue to play an important role in helping us advance our mission and amplify the impact of our work.

As we look to the future, one thing is clear: ensuring the long-term success of the CKC requires adaptability. While we will always remain grounded in our proud history and traditions, we must also be willing to evolve and embrace new opportunities.

We are on the cusp of an exciting period for the organization.

The launch of FETCH has signalled a growing appetite for performance-based sports and provided another avenue for dogs and owners to engage in meaningful activities together. We have established a Future Leaders Committee to better understand how we can attract, support, and retain new participants in our community while ensuring the next generation has a voice in shaping the future of the CKC. We are also exploring exciting opportunities to strengthen partnerships within the broader dog community and position the CKC as the trusted, national voice on matters relating to dogs, including their health, welfare, and well-being.

The opportunities ahead are significant. By building on our strengths, embracing innovation, and remaining responsive to the needs of our members, I believe we can continue to grow the relevance and impact of the CKC for years to come.

As I conclude my first year, I would like to sincerely thank our members for the trust you have placed in me as your Executive Director. This year has been one of learning the foundation upon which the CKC was built, listening carefully to feedback, understanding the challenges and opportunities before us, and working with many dedicated individuals to position our organization for future success.

I am excited about what lies ahead and look forward to continuing this journey together.
